2011 Resolution Recap

Another year has passed, far to fast if you ask me.  I thought I would recap how last years resolutions went.  Here was last years list.

  • Run 1000 miles (It averages about 20 a week so Ill actually HAVE to do it but training should make it easy)  Also, I need to find a counter that I can update when I do run.  Any ideas?
  • Run 2 Half Marathons (The first goal is to finish, the second is to beat the first race's time)
  • Run full Marathon, just finish
  • Finish the kids one year scrap book
  • Finish pregnancy scrape book
  • Make one new recipe a week
  • Clean dishes out of sick nightly
  • Bake a loaf of bread from scratch
  • Do a new activity with kids every month
  • Read 12 books
  • Complete 3 items per month of my 101 in 1001 days to stay on track to finish on time \
So how did I do?  Not TOOO bad
I did not run 1000 miles.  Life happened and to see my kids smile became more important than putting on my shoes

I did run 2 Half Marathons, I did not beat my first run time.  Theres always next time.

I did not run a full Marathon, again life happened.

I did complete the kids one year scrap books and my pregnancy book.  YEA, so excited.

As for new recipes, I did try new ones.  However, I dont think I did a new one once a week.  I tried new things, that was the goal.

Clean dishes nightly?  Didnt happen, I tried but sometimes Im just too tired.

Bake bread from scratch?  Yea that didnt happen either.

Do a new activity with the kids every month?  That did happen, I will post later with details.

Read 12 books.  I read 10, close so I wont be myself up about it.

Complete 36 tasks for 101 in 1001, Im 10 short :(  But I will make up for it this year.

So theres my successes and failures.  I did better than I thought I would.  Anyone else reflect on their 2011 Resolutions?

Wounded Warrior

So I just realized that I never did a race recap for my second half marathon.  Oops, so here it goes.

I decided to run the Wounded Warrior.  It was the right time, it supports the military and lets face it, the course was flat.  I was determined to beat my previous time from the Rock-N-Roll Half and I figured this was the place to do it.  Boy was I wrong.

Let me start from the beginning.

The night before, I was NOT hungry.  I forced myself to eat because I knew I had to eat.  I drank lots of water and set my clothes out for the next morning.  I dont function well at 430 in the morning and I didnt want to leave anything behind.

I laid down and prepared myself for sleep.  It didnt work too well.  My mind wouldnt stop and I ended up staring at the ceiling until 3AM.

At 430, my alarm went off.  I dressed in the dark, ran into the door, grabbed my breakfast, and stumbled to the car.  Im pretty sure I looked like I was taking the walk of shame in my running clothes.

I drove and met the people I was running with and found that my glove box was jammed.  My watch, my carrier, and my music was in there.  There was no way I would run with no music, I wont make it.  I rammed it open (it now wont close now) and grabbed my stuff.

Adrenaline was pumping, I want to get it over with, I was so tried.  Before the race, we snapped this picture, its the only one  I got from the entire day.
Im tired and groggy but Im ready to go. I find the pacer that I want to stay with and waiting for the race to start.  3....2...1, go and we were off.  I was good the first 2 miles, right on pace and I found my grove.  4 miles clocked in at 38 minutes, still on track.

6 miles, 59 minutes, yea I can do this.

Then the heat came.  I was getting tired and my stomach was growling.  At mile 7, I ate a GU, at the same time I always do and fast walked to down some water.  Thats when it happened.  I came around the corner and my stomach flipped.  I ran to the bushes and puked.  It was not pretty.  I wiped my mouth, grabbed some more water and took off.  Thats when it went completely down hill.

My toes began to ache, they never ache at mile 8-9.  Then I felt my toenail, in the bottom of my sock.  Disgusting I know.  Thats when the liquid came.  Im was 100% positive my shoe just filled with blood.  This is when I said screw my time and I walked.  I just wanted the whole thing to be over.  I was NOT enjoying myself this run.  I blame the heat and the lack of sleep.

Around mile 11, the 2:20 pacer passed me.  Im not gonna lie, I was a little butt hurt.  I pushed down and fought myself to stay with her.  That lasted about 2 minutes.  I got cramps, I wanted to puke, my socks were soaked. She slowly distanced her self from me.

Thats what it dawned on me.  My time REALLY doesnt matter, I just wanna finish.  At that moment, the music gods shed mercy on my.  Sad but True by Metallica started to play.  I smiled and took off.  I finished, wet socks and all.

My primary goal was to beat my previous time of 2:25.  My seondary goal was to finish in 2:15.  Neither happend, I finished at 2:29:31, but I finished.

On another note, when I got home, my socks were not filled with blood.  Turns out I got a blister on TOP of my toe and it popped.  I got to figure this out before I attempt the full in December or my feet might fall off.

Im in desperate need of a pedicure, this running is killing my toes.
And thats the 'good' foot.
Sad but True.

Why run?

Ill say it.  Ill finally admit it.  Im a runner.  Never in my dreams, err nightmares, did I ever think that I would enjoy running.  Oh how life has changed.

From what I used to dread, I know look forward to.  Its my time to clear my head.  Its my time to sort through things that I dont have time to think about when Im taking care of the kids or working.  Its my ME time.

This time last year, I ran my first REAL 5k.  I have run them before but I would walk or just joke around.  I was nervous that Id trip, lets face it, Im pretty clumsy, or worse not be able to finish it.  33 minutes later, I finished with a starting point.

I began to run a little more every week.  It became easier, I became faster.  I am by no means fast, but Ill get there, one day.  Then I decided to push myself.  I set my New Year's Resolutions (Crap I just realized I set the title to 2010, not 2011, Ill correct)  2 half marathons, 1 full marathon and 1000 miles.

To date I have 1 half marathon completed and have logged 216 miles on my feet.  Im a little behind but nothing I cant handle.  I will complete this.

Why you ask?

Because its for me.  Its to prove to me that I can do it.

A year ago, the thought of a casual 9 mile run terrified me.  I now look forward to Saturday mornings where I know I have an hour and half to clear my head.  To know that I have time set aside, for me.  Selfish?  Maybe, but everyone needs me time.

Last night I went for a short 4 mile run.  Whoever would have thought that Id say 4 miles is short when 1 mile scared me to death?  Not me thats for sure.  Anyway, it was a GREAT run.  The first 1.5 mile was a breeze.  I was looking over the lake, with a clear head, and tears came strolling down my face.  There was no reason for it, they just came.  Its like some inner peace that came over me and the tears were the release.  At mile 3, I checked my watch.  It said 31 minutes. I thought "Oh man, Im gonna get this 4 under 40"  I tend to set small goals so I can see progress.  Im the person that if I dont see progress, I move on.  Anyway, I picked it up and finished in 39.55  Gaol made, 4 miles under 40 minutes.  The next goal is to get 5 miles under 50 then to get that darn 10k under an hour.

Baby steps.

And its all for me.

My First Half

I have never claimed that I am a runner.  My way of thinking has changed.

Over the last few months, since January, I have been training for my first half marathon.  I paid for it in December, and if you know me, I will not waste money so there was no turning back.  Its been a long road.  From being bored on the treadmill, a smaller race to see where I stood, new distances I ran, sicknesses, other woman issues, its been a long few months.  I slacked, I ran, I was nervous.

I pushed my nervous thoughts out of my head and just said to myself, quit worrying, you can do this.  My nerves faded.  The came Saturday.  I went to pick up my packet.
I saw the sign and my stomach flipped.  For whatever reason, it became real at that moment.  I just about puked, in front of everyone.  I got my packet, which included and awesome shirt that I will defiantly be running in soon, and started to look around.  I have mentioned that my hair is out of control.  It gets humid and my little hairs sprout out everywhere.  Its thin so bobby pins dont help.  I NEED headbands.  Here's the problem, they dont stay in place.  I dont know how many I have bought but Im pretty sure I could do the hair of a small orphanage. I have tried them all. Anyway, I found a booth that was selling one that 'would not move'  Guess what?  IT NEVER MOVED OFF MY HEAD  My fly-aways stayed put the entire race.  This headband is the best thing I could have bought.  If your in need of one, check it out.  Its pricey for a headband, but its worth every cent.

Sunday morning, I was woken up at 5 by Elyse yelling "Mommy, Mommy, its scary"  I didnt want to mess with it so I brought her to bed with me (dont judge)  She sat up and played until my alarm went off at 545 in which she decided to dance on the bed.  Love her.

I loaded up my pile that I laid out the night before and headed downtown.  I got about 3 miles from the house and realized I left my phone, my bib, and the directions.  I turned around.  When I got downtown the exits were closed (the ones THEY told us to take to park) so I drove in circles trying to figure out where to go.  I ended up in a parking lot and walked to city hall.  Music was blaring and the butterflies came back. Thats when I realized my chip was in my front seat.  I RAN back to the car, bumped my head on the door and grabbed my chip and RAN back.  It was NOT a good morning.

Once I got back to start area, I saw my mom.  Mrs Picture Happy, that I probably wont get until next year, started taking pictures.  Its a good thing because I left my camera.  I can run with my phone, not a camera.  I ate a banana, drank some water, and ate some sport beans.  We waited for our corral to get to the start line.  More pictures, more butterflies.  Just before our countdown, I got this shot:
Notice the headband?  Do you see me clinching?  Im nervous but ready to get started.  Its go time.

The first 8 miles was uphill.  It didnt look that bad on paper but it was NOT what I was expecting.  Heres the rundown.

Mile 1-3
It was cake.  I was smiling and zoning out and getting into a groove.

Mile 4-6
I was right on pace.  At 4 miles, I was 42 minutes, at 5 I was 53 minutes at 10k mark I was at 1:06.  My thought was "Must pick it up, must pick it up"  "Get to 8, Get to 8"

Mile 7
Oh mile 7, how I loathe you.  There was a big hill but I kept pushing to keep my time.  Then POP.  My hip popped, out of place.  Not like broke it but it was a definite pop.  I had no choice to be slow to a walk and get it back in place.  Im not sure how far, just that it was about one song long, but I know it was before mile 8 marker.  I got it back it place and picked it back up again.

Mile 8
From this point on, the course was down hill.  I was so happy for this and got myself to zone out.

Have you ever heard of a runner's high?  Ive never had one.  At this point I did.

Mile 9-12
I honestly dont remember anything.  I remember seeing the times and thinking Im going to finish between 2:15 and 2:30.  I remember nothing else, except when I started to cry.  I hit mile mark 12, and tears came out.  I have never run 12 miles at once.  Something came over me and the tears just came out.  It was the BEST feeling that I cant even put it into words.

At this point, I picked it up a little bit. Part because I was crying, part I wanted to finish strong, and part I just wanted to be done to say I did it.

The crowds cheered and a UT band was playing, I sped up.

I crossed the finish line with what I thought was 2:23.  (We were corral 10 and started about 20 minutes after the clock started so I was estimating)  I got my medal and guess what?  Thats right, I cried some more.

Officially, my over times looked like this:
Pace 11:06
5k 32:26
10k 1:06:40
10 mile 1:51:08
Chip Time 2:25:20

I was a little off, but close enough.
I did it.
With tears, but I finished.

I AM a runner and I couldnt be happier.

Are you ready for some football?

This weekend was filled with football excitement.  After getting over a cold, Elyse was back on the table and running around like she always does.  Cole began to tackle.

Light bulb

Is it to early to start putting football into their minds?  We are in Texas after all.

And so it goes...

Down...

Set...
(They are jumping up)

Hunt, and they both would take off and tackle me.  No pictures to show this, they were all a blurr or of the floor.

I also got them both to yell TOUCHDOWN and throw their arms in the air.

Its begun.

On another note, I ran 8 miles on Sunday morning.  After the snow/ice melted and the sun came out, I had to get outside.  It was a slow run and I didnt stop (with the exception of stop lights, puddling jumping, and re-adjusting my hair)  It was a good run.  If I can run 8 without stopping ,even if slow, I can run 13.  Ill be ready in 7 weeks I have no doubt about that.  Also, Im slowly chipping away at my resolution to run 1000 miles this year.
